The order is distance from
Whashton, nearest first.
Food quality is my personal view.
WHASHTON - Hack and Spade. Easy walking distance 5 to 10
minutes. A pleasant, small friendly pub that is noted for it excellent
restaurant quality meals. Meal prices above average for pub meals, but
reasonably priced for their quality. The owners are both trained chefs. Must be
sampled. When ordering leave room for one of Gillian's desserts. The owners
target the meal trade more so than people just wanting to drink. At weekends,
and nights during the peak summer months, it is advisable to reserve a table.
The Hack and Spade unlike most other pubs is only open at nights from 7pm to
normal closing time. Children welcome.
KIRBY HILL - Shoulder of Mutton. Easy walking distance about 15 minutes. Again
a pleasant pub, larger than the Hack and Spade. More of a beer drinkers pub
rather than just wanting to serve meals. Meals are standard pub food, average
quality, average prices. The Shoulder of Mutton is used more by the locals,
than the Hack and Spade. The owners tend to organize events: e.g. live music
evenings (usually Mondays), quiz nights etc. Children welcome.
RAVENSWORTH - Bay Horse. If your keen it is in walking distance, about a mile,
but an up hill climb coming back. A good pub to drink or eat in. The meals are
good value, the menu perhaps a little limited. Very pleasant. The owners have
only been open for business since late summer of 1997. I would imagine the menu
should develop.
DALTON - Travellers Rest. About 4 mile from Whashton. Typical Yorkshire village
pub. Meals of similar quality to the Hack and Spade i.e. above average.
Personally I thing the Hack and Spade desserts are better and therefore has the
edge.
BARNINGHAM - Milbank Arms. You will not have seen a pub like this for many a
year. Well worth a visit but eat elsewhere before you go; unless you only want
a bag of crisps. I suspect this pub has not changed for the last 50 - 60 years.
Unique.
MOULTON - Black Bull Inn. About 8 miles away, 3 miles to the east of Scotch
Corner. I have not sampled their meals, but they have the reputation of being
the best in the locality. Ideal for the special occasion or if you are just
rich.
CARTHORPE - Fox and Hounds. About 30 minute car drive. Carthorpe is just off
the west side of the A1 about 15 miles south of Scotch Corner. Meals very good
quality, well worth the drive. It would be advisable to reserve a table at
weekends and peak holiday periods.
SCOTCH CORNER - Vintage Hotel. About 5 miles. Good quality meals but somewhat
over priced.
OTHER LOCAL PUBS WORTH CONSIDERING
SMALLWAYS - On the
A66. There are 2 pubs side by side. The A66 Motel and the Smallways Inn just
behind the Motel.
RAVENSWORTH / A66 Foxhall Inn - The are 2 turn offs to Ravensworth from the A66. The
Foxhall Inn is situated on the A66 between the 2 turnoffs.
GILLING WEST - about 2 to 3 mile east of Whashton. There are 2 pubs their.
The following villages all have traditional pubs all offering meals:
HUTTON MAGNA
CALDWELL
MIDDLETON TYAS
EPPLEBY
MELSONBY
PIERCEBRIDGE
WINSTON
WHORLTON
And finally there area dozen or more in RICHMOND and countless more in many
villages as you travel the Yorkshire Dales. Have fun!
